Cutting Square by Eye?
I am a big believer in learning as many different ways of doing something as you can. When I took guitar lessons as a teenager, my instructor told me to learn from as many different guitar players as I could and then develop my own style. So how does that apply to framing (or life for that matter)? In the past I would have said read as much about framing from as many different authors as you can and use what makes sense on your job. Now though we can add the internet and specifically YouTube and Instagram. We can watch carpenters from all over the country or world and while we may not be able to use all of what we see, it does expand our abilities. This keeps us open minded and reduces tunnel vision.
Over the summer we had a young guy working with us that had zero experience on the job. So it was back to teaching basics. I posted some of that on Instagram and it made me rethink some of what I do now. Below are a few videos on using saws. I got a lot negative messages and was called names in some cases. But the idea is to learn as many different techniques and then apply what you works for you. Like a house, skills have to start with a good foundation. Its fun to try new things right?
